Contemporary Waterfront Living

Working with a family relocating from interstate, this project reimagined a traditional brick and tile home as a stunning modern coastal residence. Design development began while the clients were still out of state, requiring clear communication and comprehensive documentation to establish the vision remotely. The transformation centred on capturing the property's prime waterfront position. At the rear, the roof was raised to create dramatic raked ceilings. The entire rear facade was opened up with floor-to-ceiling glazing - stacker doors, topped with clerestory windows and a strategically placed corner window that frames pool and water views beyond the new deck. Raising the roof and achieving the corner window detail involved extensive engineering consultation to address the structural implications of removing traditional corner support while maintaining building integrity. The street-facing elevation received equally significant attentiona new carport, complete roof replacement with Colorbond, and rendered exterior finish delivered a massive uplift in curb appeal and a cohesive contemporary aesthetic. The project required careful navigation of local regulatory requirements, particularly challenging for clients unfamiliar with the area's building framework. Pool compliance upgrades were necessary, and council initially required review by an additional government agency due to the property's waterfront location. Detailed submissions successfully secured an exemption, streamlining the approval process. As an owner builder project, comprehensive plans and ongoing regulatory guidance provided the support needed for the clients to manage construction confidently despite being new to the region.
